• Students should work on these exercises individually and then check in pairs.

Teacher’s Notes

Target Structure: Prepositions of time and movement

Vocabulary: Business / General

Level: Elementary

Time: 30 minutes

Preparation: None

Suggested Teaching Method.

This handout reviews some of the most common basic preposition errors. It has controlled practice at the beginning, followed by a group communication exercise.

1. Give one handout to each student. Tell them to cover the second exercise, so they can’t cheat! Direct students to fill in the first exercise to the best of their knowledge.

Students should then check in pairs. Finally, go through the answers with the entire class.

Students should read the table. Check for unknown vocabulary.

Elicit / model the first question.

2. Students should speak to as many people as possible. When a student answers in the affirmative, the other student should write the name in the table.

The teacher should monitor the conversations, making a note of any relevant preposition errors. After the exercise has finished, write some of the errors on the board, and elicit correction. It’s not necessary to point out who made the mistakes – you don’t want to add pressure to students who find this kind of exercise difficult.
